| The goal of the ECOSENS Work Package 1 is to conduct a collaborative assessment of (imagined) energy worlds. As part of Work Package 1, this Milestone Document reports the results achieved in Task 1.1. Based on qualitative research, it assembles national case studies concerning views and perceptions by the public of small modular reactors (SMRs) in six European countries: Slovenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom. The following questions have driven our research: 1) What are the views and attitudes around SMRs? 2) How are the safety and environmental impacts of SMRs viewed compared to ‘traditional’ nuclear power plants? 3) How do concerns about climate change and energy security (or environmental stewardship and sustainability) influence public views? 4) How do SMRs compare to other energy sources, such as renewables or conventional fossil fuels? After a methodology description, each national case study follows the same structure of: a) presenting information about SMR technology development in the given country gathered via desk research; b) analysing the qualitative data (mostly collected via focus group discussions and interviews) and highlighting insights concerning our research questions; and c) pointing out the main conclusions. This document aims to spark the debate among ECOSENS project partners and lay the ground for other publication and dissemination activities, including Deliverable 1.1. | ||
