STUDY DESCRIPTION
Given that exposure to radiation and to nanoparticles individually produce detrimental changes to the heart, it is important to establish if there are more serious detrimental consequences arising from an exposure to both agents. We have adopted an experimental approach using ex-vivo guinea pig hearts perfused with a miniaturized Langendorff-device to determine if there are acute changes in heart function or biology arising from an acute exposure to ionizing radiation followed immediately by exposure to nanoparticles. This study indicates the combined noxae evoke a unique of adverse effects and provide mechanistic evidence to understand the interaction.
